Muskellunge stockings into Lake Miltona began in 1982 to provide anglers with a unique fishing opportunity and spread fishing pressure across a greater area. Approximately 1,400 fingerlings are stocked every other year to provide a low density, but trophy Muskellunge fishery.
\n
\nA mark-recapture population estimate of Muskies began in spring of 2019 on Lake Miltona using passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags (see 2019 targeted survey). Fish were sampled using both large frame trap nets and electrofishing in 2019. In spring of 2021, the recapture phase was completed using exclusively electrofishing with a total of 169 fish sampled.
\n
\nBetween the two years of sampling, a total of 229 unique adult (30 inches or greater) Muskies were PIT tagged. An additional 28 juvenile Muskies were tagged for future age and growth information. Captured Muskies ranged from 17 to 53 inches. The average length of tagged fish was 41 inches. A total of 19 Muskies exceeded 50 inches, which is higher than all previous surveys combined on Lake Miltona. This is likely due to the addition of electrofishing, which was more effective at sampling larger fish, and likely not an actual change in the population.
\n
\nThe 2021 population estimate was 757 adult Muskies. By sex the estimates were as follows: 295 females, 419 males and 43 unknown. This yields an estimate of 0.13 adult Muskies per surface acre, comparable to other low density, trophy Muskie populations.
\n
A targeted Muskellunge population assessment was completed in April 2015 to gain estimates of abundance and size distribution of the adult population. Fifteen large-frame trap nets (5 X 6 feet) were set from April 16 - 29, 2015, for a total of 165 net-set days.
\n
\nThirty-two adult and two sub-adult Muskellunge were captured during the sampling period resulting in a catch rate of 0.21-fish/net. Individual sizes ranged from 17.6 to 53.6 inches. Average length of captures was 41.8 inches. The largest Muskellunge captured measured 53.6 inches.
\n

Walleye abundance, as measured by gillnet indices, had increased from approximately 11/net in 1975, 1979 and 1984 to 24.5/net in 1987. Mean size had decreased to 1.4 lbs. In 1987 due to the large number, 106 of the 275 Walleye sampled (39%) from the 1985 year-class. A portion of these fish probably came from a fingerling stocking in 1985. The 1981 year-class continues to be very strong and it is evident that the fry stocking in 1981 was successful. The Yellow Perch indices have fallen from 20.67 in 1984 to 12.42/net in 1987. This population should be closely monitored as it is a very important forage species. Northern Pike indices have also decreased. The mean size of Northern Pike has decreased to 1.94lbs/Northern Pike. The increase in Walleye indices and the decrease in Yellow Perch and Northern Pike indices may suggest a trend or it may be a sampling bias. Northern Cisco and White Suckers are present and may be used as forage by the larger Northern Pike and Walleye. Bluegills are abundant and the mean size is small. Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Black Crappie were also netted. Black, Yellow, and Brown Bullheads are large and should provide fishable populations.

Miltona is a relatively large basin with a complex bottom topography. The maximum depth of thelake is 105 feet, yet there are large areas of the lake less than 15 feet deep. Water clarity isexceptional which allows submergent plants to grow to a depth of 20 feet. Ample aquatic vegetation andfirm substrate provide quality spawning habitat for centrarchids. There is also many areas of rubbletype substrate which provide suitable spawning areas for walleye.Lake Miltona supports an exceptional walleye population. Gillnet catches averaged 23.3 fish/net in1995. Gillnet catches have ranged from 9.7 to 32.8 fish/net in previous surveys dating back to 1979. The normal range of mean catch rates from lakes with similar chemical and physical characteristics is4.0 - 9.6 fish/gillnet. Mean weight of fish captured in 1995 was 1.0 pounds. Northern pike catchesaveraged 2.9 fish/gillnet. Gillnet catches have ranged from 2.8 to 4.9 fish/net in previous surveysdating back to 1986. Gillnet catches averaged 7.9 fish/net in 1984 and 9.0 fish/net in 1979. Thenormal range of mean catch rates from similar lakes is 3.0 - 7.9 fish/gillnet. Mean weight of fishcaptured was 2.6 pounds. Largemouth bass are abundant and the size structure of the population shouldprovide for quality angling opportunities. Night, DC electrofishing yielded 47.5 stock-size fish perhour. Approximately 90% of the fish captured were 12.0 inches in length or greater and 12% exceeded15 inches. Mean weight of fish captured was 1.6 pounds. Age-2 and age-3 fish were not captured duringthe electrofishing survey. This is likely the result of poor reproductive success during the coolsummers of 1992 and 1993 when temperatures were much below normal. Bluegill abundance has declined inrecent years. Trapnet catches averaged 3.7 fish/net in 1995. Trapnet catches ranged between 24.4 and33.2 fish/net in previous surveys dating back to 1979. The normal range of mean catch rates fromsimilar lakes is 3.7 - 42.9 fish/trapnet. This recent decline is likely the result of poorreproductive success during the unusually cool summers of 1992 and 1993. Only one age-3 fish and noage-2 fish were present in the trapnet catches. Yellow perch catches averaged 7.6 fish/gillnet. Gillnet catches have ranged from 9.2 to 27.1 fish/net in previous surveys dating back to 1979. Thenormal range of mean catch rates from similar lakes is 7.1 - 33.9 fish/gillnet. Seven muskellunge werecaptured during the standard lake survey. All of the fish were cohorts of the 1993 year class (age-2). Total lengths ranged from 20.0 to 24.0 inches.

Walleye and Northern Pike populations are abundant as indicated by net catch indices of 9.67 and 7.92 respectively. Walleye recruitment is adequate as indicated by the length frequency distribution with most year classes represented. Yellow Perch numbers have decreased, however, there the population has remained relatively high. Cisco, another important forage fish, have shown a significant decrees in abundance. Trap and gill nets indices show an increase in abundance of smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Pumpkinseed. Rock Bass numbers have decreased significantly.

Miltona is a popular, heavily developed recreational lake located about ten miles north of Alexandria in Douglas County. The lake offers diverse habitat and structure; including extensive shallow flats, submerged islands and bars, and depths over 100 feet. Water quality and clarity are considered good. Seechi disk transparency is usually ten feet or greater during summer months. Lake Miltona supports an abundant and diverse aquatic plant community, including large beds of hardstem bulrush. These aquatic plants provide important spawning and cover habitat for many fish species. They also help to maintain water quality and protect the shoreline from wave and boat traffic induced erosion. Primary fisheries management is directed towards walleye. Gill net catches averaged 10.9 fish/net in 2003. Mean weight of fish captured was 1.6 pounds. The long range goal for walleye gill net catches stated in the Lake Management Plan was increased to 16.0 fish/net in 2001 as part of the Accelerated Walleye Program. This upward revision was precipitated by a low catch rate of 7.1 fish/net recorded in 1999 and a catch rate of 12.1 fish/net recorded in a special assessment completed in 2000. Gill net catches typically exceeded 20 fish/net in surveys completed in the mid 1980s through 1995. Walleye stocking has been intense in response to gill net catch rates that have not met management objectives. Fry have been stocked annually since 1999. Additional fingerlings, yearlings, and adults have also been stocked annually since 1999. These additional contingency stockings have been based on poor fall electrofishing results for age-0 walleye. Largemouth bass and bluegill are abundant and should provide ample fishing opportunities. Current size structure of both species should appeal to most anglers. Northern pike abundance is low to moderate, however fast growth rates result in a favorable size structure. Mean weight of fish captured was 3.0 pounds. Black crappie and smallmouth bass also contribute to the quality fishery on Lake Miltona. These species are not effectively sampled with standard survey gear, thus numbers of fish captured in survey nets do not reflect actual densities. Lake Miltona is also a popular spot for muskie anglers. The lake supports a quality muskellunge population. Muskellunge have been stocked on a regular basis since the early 1980s. Muskie stocking became a contentious issue during the late-1990s. Opponents to the stocking program incorrectly blamed muskellunge for the decline in walleye abundance and for the short-term decline in bluegill numbers. A creel survey will be conducted in 2004 to determine fishing pressure, angler preferences, and success rates. This information should provide some insight into the user conflicts associated with the muskellunge stocking program.

This lake is a very popular destination for both anglers and recreational boaters. Recreational pressure can be high, especially on weekend days during summer. Three public accesses are available for use. Parking space is limited at the west access. There is one posted fish spawning area located on the northern shoreline of the west bay. Fishing is prohibited in this area during the spring spawning season.

\nLake Miltona supports a diverse and healthy fish community. Habitat diversity includes shallow flats, submerged islands and bars, shallow bays, and extensive areas of emergent vegetation. Primary fish management investment is focused on walleye. Muskellunge are also stocked to maintain a trophy fishery.

\nAnnual fry and periodic fingerling stockings are programmed in efforts to supplement natural reproduction and sustain high walleye numbers and catch rates. DNR stockings are augmented with fingerlings purchased and stocked by the Lake Miltona Association. Achieving and sustaining walleye management objectives has proven difficult in absence of natural reproduction and recruitment. Walleye catches in gillnets have increased during recent years. Population abundance is considered high when compared to similar lakes across Minnesota. Juvenile and young adult walleye comprise much of the population. Mean length and weight of the 2007 sample was just 13.1 inches and 1.1 pounds. High abundance and smaller average size can be attributed to recent strong year classes produced in 2004 and 2006. The 2006 year class appears exceptionally strong and should provide good fishing for many years. Walleye grow fast in Lake Miltona. Walleye typically exceed 16.0 inches after four growing seasons.

\nLake Miltona is home to a unique and very popular muskellunge fishery. It is one of only three lakes within the Glenwood Management Area stocked with muskellunge. Age distribution of survey captures indicates some limited natural reproduction can occur, but alternate year fingerlings stockings are necessary to maintain a viable fishery. The \"trophy\" fishing potential of this lake is relatively high. Population density is low, but captures of muskellunge exceeding 50.0 inches are not uncommon. Muskellunge harvest is restricted by a 48-inch minimum length limit. All muskies less than 48.0 inches in total length (tip of closed mouth to tip of closed tail fin) must be immediately released.

\nOther popular gamefishes present include largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, black crappie, and bluegill. Largemouth bass are more abundant and on average, a little smaller than smallmouth bass. Northern pike abundance is relatively low and most fish captured in gillnets were small. Mean length and weight of the 2007 sample was 22.9 inches and 2.8 pounds.

\nPanfish anglers can anticipate good fishing experiences. Yellow perch abundance has declined in recent years. Although numbers are lower, size structure of this population is relatively good. Perch exceeding 8.0 inches in length were relatively common in the 2007 survey catch. Black crappie exist at a low to moderate density. Average size captured during the 2007 survey was 9.2 inches. Crappie exceeding 12.0 inches were measured. Record-high bluegill numbers were observed in the 2007 survey. Size structure of the population is reasonably good considering the increase in abundance. Mean length of bluegill captured was 6.7 inches. Eight-inch and larger bluegill were recorded.

\nOther species collected during the 2007 survey included black, brown, and yellow bullhead, hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed sunfish, tullibee (cisco), white sucker, bowfin (dogfish), and rock bass. Rock bass are very abundant in Lake Miltona when compared to similar lakes across Minnesota.

\nWalleye abundance is currently considered high when compared to similar lakes across Minnesota. In fact, the 2015 gill net catch was the second highest documented since the mid-1990s. Smaller, younger fish comprise the majority of this population. Mean size of Walleyes captured during 2015 survey was 14.7 inches and 1.3 pounds. High abundance and smaller average size can be attributed to the moderate year classes produced in 2012, 2013, and 2014 and sustained presence of an extremely strong year class established in 2011. Walleye growth rates have slowed in recent years due to increased density of smaller fish. 2015 survey results indicate Walleyes typically reach 14.0 inches after four growing seasons and exceed 16.0 inches by age five. Annual fry stockings and occasional fingerling stockings are currently prescribed to supplement this population and help bolster Walleye abundance. However, high Walleye abundance is difficult to sustain in large lakes through supplemental stocking. Successful natural reproduction and subsequent recruitment are the keys to sustaining quality Walleye fisheries in these waters.

All muskies less than 54.0 inches in total length (tip of closed mouth to tip of closed tail fin) must be released immediately.

\nOther quality fishing opportunities exist for Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Black Crappies, and Bluegills. Lake Miltona supports both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass populations. Largemouth Bass are more abundant than Smallmouth Bass, but average size of Smallmouth Bass is greater than that of Largemouth Bass. Largemouth Bass abundance has moderated in response to limited natural recruitment in the recent past. Most Largemouth Bass captured during a spring electrofishing survey were young fish less than five-years-old. Average size of the electrofishing catch decreased to 10.3 inches. Black Crappie and Bluegill populations remain healthy and anglers can expect moderate abundance and size structure for both species. Most crappie captures during the 2015 survey were two-year-old fish, but age distribution of the catch extended to age 9. Crappie lengths at time of capture ranged from 3.8 to 14.0 inches. Bluegill catches were well within the upper range of expected catches for lakes similar to Lake Miltona. Age assignments for captured Bluegills extended to age 10. Average length of Bluegills captured during the 2015 survey was 5.6 inches, but due to the broad age distribution of the population sample, 8.0-inch and larger captures were common. The largest Bluegill measured during the 2015 survey was 9.2 inches.

\nNorthern Pike are not abundant in Lake Miltona. Most captures in 2015 were small. Average size in 2015 was 21.2 inches and 2.3 pounds. Two, 29.0-inch pike were measured.

\nYellow Perch abundance has declined from high levels found throughout the mid-2000s, but gill net catch rates can still be qualified as moderate when compared to similar Minnesota lakes. The majority of this population is comprised of smaller individuals but a few captures approached 10.0 inches in length.
\n
\nOther species collected during the 2015 survey include Bowfin (dogfish), Common Carp, Hybrid Sunfish, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Rock Bass, Tullibee (Cisco), White Sucker, and Yellow Bullhead. The next lake survey is tentatively scheduled for 2019.

\nFishing pressure on Lake Miltona can be heavy at times, during both open water and winter seasons. To help maintain fishing quality, anglers are encouraged to practice selective harvest. Selective harvest encourages the release of larger fish while allowing the harvest of the more abundant smaller fish for eating. Releasing medium to large fish will ensure that the lake will have enough spawning age fish and should provide anglers with opportunities to catch more large fish in the future.

Lake Miltona, located north of Alexandria, is the largest lake in Douglas County at 5,724 acres. The lake has a maximum depth of 105 feet, yet is productive since nearly half of the lake is less than 15 feet. Lake Miltona is within the Long Prairie River watershed. The lake has flowage connections to Lake Irene and Lake Ida. These flowage channels are non-navigable channels. Three public access sites with concrete ramps are located on the west, north and northeast shorelines. Parking is limited on the west side.

\nA standard lake survey was completed in 2019 to gain updated information on gamefish abundance and identify shifts in fish community structure in response to infestation of zebra mussels in 2012 and greater water clarity. Water transparency at time of the survey was 16.5 feet. Increasing water clarity is projected to result in an expansion of aquatic vegetation and a change in fish community structure.
\n
\nWalleye catches were well below that of past surveys even though supplemental fry stockings and DNR and private fingerling stockings have continued. There is some uncertainty as to whether reduced catches were the result of increase water clarity and ability of Walleye to see and avoid nets, movements of Walleye into deeper water, or a real decline. Failure to catch young-of-year Walleye in annual fall electrofishing surveys from 2015 through 2018 provides some credence that the decline in catch rates reflected reduced recruitment of young Walleye into the population and a real decline in population density. Walleye catches ranged from 7.4 inches to 26.8 inches and averaged 17.0 inches. Walleye anglers will likely have to adjust expectations and tactics to find Walleye, particularly during daylight hours. A modest fall electrofishing catch rate of 16.0 young Walleye/hour during the 2019 survey gives some promise of young fish recruiting into the fishery.

\nLake Miltona supports a healthy bass fishery. Largemouth Bass catch rates describe an abundant population. Electrofishing captures averaged 11.4 inches in length. The largest Largemouth Bass capture measured 17.3 inches. Smallmouth Bass are also present, but are not well sampled with standard lake survey methods. Smallmouth Bass captures tended to be larger, averaging 15.9 inches. The largest measured 18.0 inches.
\n
\nNorthern Pike persist at an acceptably low population density given primary management emphasis on Walleye. Pike captures averaged 22.4 inches in length. The largest fish measuring 32.1 inches. Lake Miltona is in the North-central Northern Pike harvest zone. The daily bag limit for pike was increased to 10 fish, but no more than two pike can exceed 26.0 inches. Anglers are reminded that all pike measuring between 22 to 26 inches must be released. Northern Pike taken by spearing follow the same rules except one pike may be between 22 and 26 inches, or two larger than 26 inches. \nGood panfishing opportunities exist from Lake Miltona. Few Black Crappie were captured during the late summer survey, but lots of crappie were captured during the spring Muskellunge netting assessment. Crappie captured in trap nets during the August survey averaged 9.2 inches. Length of captures extended to 12.8 inches. Bluegill are abundant. Survey captures averaged 6.0 inches. Modest numbers of 8.0 inch and larger Bluegill were measured. The largest measured 8.6 inches. Rock Bass and Pumpkinseed Sunfish add to fishing diversity. Many Rock Bass captures exceeded 10.0 inches. The largest measured 13.2 inches. Yellow Perch catches declined in 2019. Most are too small to stimulate angler interest and harvest.

\nOther fishes captured during the 2019 survey included Bowfin (Dogfish), Brown Bullhead, Cisco (Tullibee), hybrid sunfish, White Sucker, and Yellow Bullhead. \nManagement Note: Lake Irene is located upstream of Lake Miltona. Zebra mussels were detected in Lake Irene in 2011. The area where zebra mussels were found was treated with copper sulfate in an attempt to eradicate this harmful exotic species from Lake Irene. Success of the treatment has not yet been determined. Because of Lake Miltona's proximity to Lake Irene, it is at increased risk to zebra mussel infestation. Anglers are urged to be extremely vigilant to prevent spread of zebra mussels and other exotic invasives to uninfested lakes. Walleye abundance, as measured by gillnet indices, remains very high at 28.0 per net. This is up slightly from the 1987 survey and more than double the indices from surveys in 1984, 1979, and 1975. Mean size has declined from 1.7 pounds in 1984 pounds in 1987 to 1.0 pounds in the present survey. Size structure as measured by PSD's has similarly dropped from 80% in the 1984 survey to 24% in 1989. Declining size can be attributed to the population being heavily dominated by the 1986 year class coupled with the disappearance of the previously dominant 1981 year class. Although fingerlings were stocked at 1 pound per littoral acre in 1986, returns of coded wire tags from research study 138 indicate year class strength can be attributed primarily to natural reproduction. Growth rates of Walleye have apparently declined. The 1984 year class sampled in the 1987 survey averaged 14.7 inches at formation of the third annulus. The 1986 year class in 1989 averaged only 12.0 inches. This may be due to intraspecific competition within this cohort. Yellow Perch gill net indices were normal for class 27 at 13.5/net, and PSD was 14%. Both values were stable since the 1987 survey. Shoal water seining caught 1,467 age 0 Yellow Perch, over 7 times more than the 201 sampled in the 1987 survey and indicative of a very strong year class. Gillnet caught Walleye were found to be almost exclusively consuming the 1989 year class of Yellow Perch. If this cohort fails to recruit to the gill nets in future years, it could indicate excessive predation on this important forage species. Northern Pike gillnet indices remained low and equal to the first quartile of class 27 at 3.2/net but mean size increased to 2.8lbs from 1.9lbs in the 1987 survey. PSD remained at 60% but RSDP-M increased from 3 to 13. Size increases were due to a lower number of age 1 Northern Pike sampled and size fish captured above the preferred size.

Miltona is a high quality, heavily developed recreational lake located about ten miles north ofAlexandria in Douglas County. The lake offers diverse habitat and structure; including shallow flats,submerged islands and bars, and depths up to 105 feet. Lake Miltona also supports an abundant anddiverse aquatic plant community, including large beds of hardstem bulrush. Water quality and clarityare considered good.Lake Miltona supports a diverse and quality fish community that attracts anglers from all over thestate. Walleye are probably the most popular fish sought after by anglers. Gill net catches averaged7.1 fish/net, which is within the normal range for this lake type. However, gill net catches haveaveraged about 23.0 fish/net in seven previous surveys dating back to 1986. The decline in abundanceis due to poor reproductive and fry stocking success in recent years. Fall electrofishing resultsindicate that natural reproduction and fry stocking have not produced a strong year class since 1995. There are fewer age-4 or younger fish in the population at this time. These younger fish normally makeup the majority of fish captured in gill nets. Previous research has concluded that walleye abundancein Lake Miltona is dependent on the formation of strong natural year classes, rather than walleyefingerling stocking. Fry are stocked in odd numbered years to supplement the natural reproduction.Largemouth bass and bluegill are abundant and should also provide ample fishing opportunities. Sizesof both species should appeal to most anglers. Anglers should note that Tamarack Bay is a PostedSpawning Area. Boating and fishing are prohibited in the posted area until June 30. Lake Miltona is also a popular spot for muskie anglers. They have been stocked on a regular basissince the early 1980's. These fish do not normally show up in standard test nets. Angler dairies andlocal reports suggest that many anglers are quite successful.

across a greater area. Approximately 1,400 fingerling are stocked every other year to provide a low density, but trophy Muskellunge fishery.

\nA Muskellunge population estimate was initiated on Lake Miltona in 2019. Large frame trap nets and night electrofishing were utilized in initial capture of Muskellunge. Muskellunge captured from both gears were measured, weighed, implanted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, and released. PIT tags are small microchips with individual identification numbers that can be scanned to determine individual fish. This will help staff determine age and growth, as well as estimate the number of adult Muskellunge in the lake.

\nSpring trap netting was conducted from May 2nd to May 13th for a total of 155 trap net days. Large frame trap nets yielded 55 Muskellunge for a catch rate of 0.35 fish/net. Four nights of spring electrofishing were conducted between April 26th and May 16th. An additional four nights of fall electrofishing were conducted as part of another study, yielding some additional fish. A total of 78 Muskellunge were captured during electrofishing.

\nOf the 133 total Muskellunge captured we were able to PIT tag a total of 116 individual Muskellunge, 106 of which were adults (30 inches or greater). Length at capture ranged from 17.0 to 52.8 inches, with a mean length of 41.4 inches. The largest fish was 40.5 pounds and 51.8 inches. Thirteen Muskellunge captured were 50.0 inches or greater. The recapture phase will be completed in spring of 2020, at which point we will be able to estimate the number of adult Muskellunge residing in Lake Miltona.

Walleye were well above the state averages for both num. and weight. Most fish netted were in the 1 1/2 to 4 lb. range. Very few fish under 12 inches were taken. Northern Pike were also well above average for number and weight. Yellow Perch, Rock Bass and Bluegills were abundant. Largemouth Bass were slightly below average Brown and Black Bullheads were below average, while Yellow Bullheads were above average.

Miltona was conducted on July 8-11, 2019 by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program Staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at all twenty four sampling stations, but two stations were sampled from the boat due to site conditions. Similarly, a 50-foot seine was used to sample twenty one stations, a 15-foot seine was used at one station, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at two stations. Nearshore sampling captured 28 species of fish including 11 species that are intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Banded Killifish, Blackchin Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, Iowa Darter, Logperch, Mimic Shiner, Mottled Sculpin, Muskellunge, Pugnose Shiner, Rock Bass, and Smallmouth Bass) and two that are tolerant of disturbance (i.e., Fathead Minnow and Green Sunfish).

\nThe nearshore data were combined with trap net and gill net data from an August 2019 survey to describe the fish community and provide a Fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (e.g., Blackchin Shiner, Iowa Darter, and Smallmouth Bass), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (e.g., Fathead Minnow and Green Sunfish). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. \nData from this survey indicates Lake Miltona is healthy as indicated by an exceptionally high FIBI score, well above the impairment threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the Long Prairie River Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.
Lake Miltona, located north of Alexandria between the towns of Miltona and Leaf Valley, is the largest (5,724 acres) recreational fishing lake in Douglas County. Maximum depth exceeds 100 feet. The lake supports a productive fishery since nearly half of the basin is less than 15 feet in depth and a well oxygenated thermal refuge area exists for coolwater fishes during summer months. Lake Miltona lies within the Long Prairie River watershed and is connected to Lake Ida to the south and Lake Irene to the east via non-navigable channels. Water quality and clarity are considered good. Water clarity has increased since establishment of zebra mussels and often exceeds 15 feet during summer months. Residential development surrounds much of the lake. This lake is a very popular destination for both anglers and recreational boaters. Recreational pressure can be high, especially on weekend days during summer months. Three public accesses are present. Parking is limited on the west access. Primary fish management efforts are focused on Walleye and Muskellunge with bass and sunfish being species of secondary management importance.

\nA standard fisheries survey was completed in 2023 to assess the fish community and gain updated estimates of abundance and size structure of gamefish populations. Lake Miltona is well known as a quality Walleye fishery. Walleye abundance (10.8 fish/gill net) has increased since the record-low level that was documented in 2019. Current abundance is now considered high when compared to similar lakes across Minnesota. Higher abundance can be attributed to increased survival and recruitment of young fish in recent years. Almost 65% of the gill net sample was comprised of Walleyes age 3 or younger. Mean size of Walleye captured in 2023 was 15.2 inches and 1.4 pounds. Lake Miltona supports a popular Muskellunge fishery. It is one of three lakes within the Glenwood Management Area where Muskellunge fingerlings are stocked. The \"trophy\" potential of this lake is relatively high. Previous angler reports and survey findings indicate that fish exceeding 50 inches are not uncommon. The current statewide regulation is a 54-inch minimum length limit. All muskies less than 54 inches in total length (tip of closed mouth to tip of closed tail fin) must be released immediately. Lake Miltona supports both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass populations. Largemouth Bass are more abundant but average size of Smallmouth Bass tends to be larger. The largest Smallmouth Bass sampled in 2023 was just shy of 19 inches. Black Crappie and Bluegill populations tend to exhibit moderate abundance and size structure. Average length of Black Crappie in 2023 was 9.2 inches in trap nets and 10.6 inches in gill nets. Average length of Bluegill in 2023 was 6.3 inches in trap nets and 5.3 inches in gill nets. Northern Pike are not abundant (2.1 fish/gill net) but size structure of this population has improved in recent years. Average size in 2023 was 23.2 inches and 3.1 pounds. The largest pike measured was almost 33 inches. Muskellunge likely aid in keeping the pike population from becoming overabundant. Northern Pike zone regulations were implemented in 2018 to help improve pike size structure. Lake Miltona is located in the North-Central Zone. Anglers can keep up to 10 pike but not more than two can be over 26 inches in length. All pike between 22-26 inches must be immediately released. Yellow Perch abundance (12.0 fish/gill net) continues to decline. Harvestable-size perch are present, but the majority of this population is comprised of smaller individuals.

\nOther species collected during the 2023 survey include Black, Brown, and Yellow Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Tullibee (Cisco), and White Sucker. The next lake survey is tentatively scheduled for 2027.

\nA concurrent summer trap net survey was also conducted by IBI Program staff. Fifteen trap nets were set along the shoreline in locations that encompassed multiple habitat types. Trap net sampling captured sixteen species of fish, including two that are intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Rock Bass and Smallmouth Bass). Sunfish species such as bluegills, pumpkinseeds, and hybrids comprised a majority of the catch by number and biomass.
